'Absolutely destroyed': Tearful Adele postpones Las Vegas residency as show 'not ready'

Pop star Adele has cancelled a US concert just a day before it was set to take place, apologising to fans in a tearful video posted online.

The UK singer/songwriter is postponing her Las Vegas residency, which was set to kick off on Friday, January 21 (local time) and consists of 24 shows at the Caesars Palace's Colosseum.

Some customers are angry that they've spent money travelling to Las Vegas for the show only to have it axed with such short notice.

Adele posted the video on her Instagram account, showing her wiping away tears while visibly upset.

"I'm so sorry, but my show isn't ready. We've tried absolutely everything that we can to pull it together in time and for it to be good enough for you, but we've been absolutely destroyed by delivery delays and COVID," she said shakily.

"I can't give you what I have right now and I'm gutted. I'm sorry it's so last minute. We've been awake for over 30 hours now trying to figure it out and we've run out of time. I'm so upset and I'm really embarrassed and I'm so sorry to everyone that's travelled again.

"I'm really, really sorry. I'm really sorry."

The Las Vegas shows were set to be the 'Someone Like You' hitmaker's first in five years since she toured the world in 2016 and 2017 with dates including three at Auckland's Mount Smart Stadium.

Adele said half of her crew are currently "down" with COVID-19.

"It's been impossible to finish the show," she says in the video.

"We're going to reschedule all the dates, we're on it right now. And I'm going to finish my show. I want to get it to where it's supposed to be... we've been up against so much and it just ain't ready."

Comments under Adele's post are largely supportive, but some customers are expressing fury.

"Her lack of notice is astounding. I'm angry and frustrated," said Gillian Rowland-Kain, according to the BBC.

She was travelling from New York for the Friday night show.

"I was furious that Adele waited so last minute to make this call... I recognise it's not a call any artist wants to make but she would've known yesterday that the show wouldn't be ready by tomorrow."

Adele was reportedly set to make around NZ$1 million per night from each of the 24 shows during her Las Vegas residency.

More information on the new dates is expected to be announced in the coming days.
