The Big Gay Out 2022, the biggest event held during Auckland's pride celebrations, has been canceled due to uncertainty around the current COVID-19 situation.

The event held by the New Zealand Aids Foundation (NZAF) usually attracts thousands of people including the Prime Minister and other prominent politicians.

"In light of the rapidly unfolding Omicron situation and given the communication from the Prime Minister in recent days, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel this year's Big Gay Out," NZAF said in a statement.

"After moving to the orange light setting, we were incredibly excited at the thought of once again engaging with our communities at one of the largest summer events planned in Aotearoa.

"However, NZAF is first and foremost a public health organisation. This means that the health and safety of our communities lies at the heart of our work, and we believe that we have the duty to take a cautious approach when we consider holding events."

The event was due to be held on February 13 at Coyle Park in Auckland.
