Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has weighed in on the Sesame Street drama gripping the internet, promising to visit the famous neighbourhood to "kick-ass and eat cookies".

A snippet of a 2004 episode of Sesame Street resurfaced on Twitter this week, with Elmo having a meltdown because his friend Zoe wanted to give his favourite cookie to a rock.

Elmo explains he loves oatmeal raisin cookies, the last of which was being given to Rocco the Rock. But Zoe tells him that Rocco, the rock, wants it.

"Rocco! Rocco's a rock Zoe! Rocco won't know the difference," Elmo, the muppet, yelled.

The pair get into a back and forth, with Elmo adamant Rocco is "just a rock" and "not alive". The clip has been viewed more than 7.5 million times in the past three days and prompted Elmo to release a statement on Thursday, informing users he and Zoe "practised sharing" and "are still best friends forever".

However, "Elmo doesn't want to talk about Rocco".

Not willing to let the scrap go, Elmo returned to Twitter a little later on Thursday.

"Has anybody ever seen a rock eat a cookie? Elmo is just curious," the character tweeted.

That tweet has now led to one of the world's top movie stars getting involved, with Johnson - known for his 'The Rock' wrestling ring name - writing, "This Rock devours cookies".

"Tell Cookie Monster to move it over, cuz I'm coming to Sesame Street to kick ass and eat cookies. And I'm almost all outta cookies."

Cookie Monster has also tweeted, saying he accepts the "cookie challenge".

Elmo is yet to respond.

According to reports, Elmo and Rocco have never had a good relationship. NBC says Rocco first arrived on Sesame Street in 1999.

In the 2004 episode, Elmo apparently is tormented by the rock, including when Rocco gets a go on a swing set before him.

It turns out that in the end, Elmo was given the oatmeal raisin cookie, with human Gabi agreeing that Rocco is not real and is unlikely to be hungry.
