French actor Gaspard Ulliel, star of Marvel's upcoming series Moon Knight, has died at the age of 37 after a skiing accident.

Ulliel was flown to hospital via helicopter from the French Alps on January 18 and succumbed to his injuries the following day.

A spokesperson for the La Rosiere Ski Resort said that the award-winning actor and another skier collided on the Blue Slope at 4pm.

"Ski patrol rescue and the in-house resort doctor were called for help and immediately arrived at the scene following the accident," the statement said.

"Albertville police are investigating the circumstances."

Local broadcaster France Bleu reported that Ulliel suffered head trauma as a result of the accident, while the other skier was not hospitalised.

A spokesperson for Disney, which owns Marvel, told Variety: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our friend and colleague Gaspard Ulliel. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this time."

Xavier Dolan, who directed Ulliel in It's Only The End of The World, paid tribute to the actor on Instagram.

"It's unbelievable, absurd, and so painful to even think of writing these words," he wrote.

"Your discreet laughter, your caring gaze. Your scar. Your talent. Your listening skill. Your whispers, your kindness.

"All these personality traits that emanated from a shining softness. Your whole being transformed my life, a being that loved deeply and that I will always love. I can't say anything more. I feel drained, shaken by your (death)."

Ulliel was known for his roles as young Hannibal Lecter in the film Hannibal Rising and as fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent in the biopic Laurent. He appears as Midnight Man in Marvel's show Moon Knight, set to be released in March this year, and was the face of Chanel's fragrance Bleu de Chanel.

In 2009, Ulliel played a fallen angel in Kiwi director Niki Caro's film adaptation of The Vintner's Luck, a novel by Elizabeth Knox.

He is survived by his girlfriend Gaëlle Piétri and their five-year-old son, Orso.
