Police urge Christchurch festival goers not to pre-load ahead of Netsky, Electric Avenue after drunken LAB and Shapeshifter gig

Police have asked Christchurch concert goers to consider their alcohol consumption ahead of several upcoming gigs, warning against "pre-loading" by drinking at home before attending.

Sergeant Dave Robertson noted that there were a number of intoxicated people turned away at last weekend's LAB and Shapeshifter concert at Hagley Park, along with some having to be removed from the venue.

"Police don't want to stop people from having fun and encourage you to have a good time in the safest way possible," Sergeant Robertson said in a statement.

With shows from international DJs Andy C and Netsky taking place in Christchurch in the coming weeks, as well as the Electric Avenue festival, police have offered some advice to ticket holders: drink in moderation.

Police said they were aware of a number of attendees to the LAB and Shapeshifter gig carrying and drinking alcohol on their way into the event despite a liquor ban being in place, warning that those who are caught could face a $250 fine on top of their ticket price.

"Pre-loading might seem like a cheap way to get ready for a night out, but you won't get into a bar or concert venue if you're intoxicated," the police statement read.

Instead, they advised: "Drink plenty of water and have some kai before heading to a gig."

Police also highlighted the risks of excessive alcohol consumption, noting it could "impair your judgment, making you vulnerable to causing or becoming a victim of crime".

The statement urged attendees to "look out for each other and make sure your mates all get home safely".
