The Royal Family has taken to social media using a series of photographs and emojis to celebrate the Duchess of Cambridge's 40th birthday.

Images posted on the Royal Family's social media account focused on Kate Middleton's warm relationship with the Queen and senior royals with a collection of photos from public engagements, the Daily Mail reported.

Balloon and birthday cake emojis were featured in the messages on the @theroyalfamily and @clarencehouse accounts.

Three new portraits of Middleton were released by Kensington Palace on Saturday to mark her 40th birthday.

Two of the three portraits taken by photographer Paolo Roversi to commemorate the Duchess's 40th birthday made it to the over 10 million followers on the Royal Family's Instagram account. The portraits will go on tour around the UK this year and will then be added to the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery.

Middleton responded to the birthday wishes on Twitter.

"Thank you for all of your very kind birthday wishes, and to Paolo and the National Portrait Gallery for these three special portraits."
