A moment caught on camera has sparked online debate over whether or not a Jamaican politician gave Kate Middleton the cold shoulder.

The video shows the Duchess of Cambridge leaning over to speak to Lisa Hanna, the opposition spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Trade, only for Hanna to turn away.

The Duchess seemed to be aware of the 'snub' and tried to stay composed afterwards.

The incident occurred during a ceremonial welcome at Kingston's Norman International Airport in Jamaica on Tuesday.

Kate Middleton and Prince William arrived in Jamaica as part of their tour of the Caribbean but were welcomed by anti-colonialist protesters calling for the Royal couple to make amends for the monarchy's history of colonialism and their ancestors' role in slavery.

Hanna is a member of the People's National Party that wants Jamaica, a former British colony, to be free from the monarchy, causing debate online over whether Hanna's actions were intentional.

The video has gone viral online with some users calling Hanna's actions "petty" and "embarrassing", while others are applauding her.

Hanna later posted on Twitter to say the pair had a pleasant conversation.

"We had a very interactive and pleasant conversation throughout the proceedings as we talked about family, our cultures and our people," Hanna posted.

"There’s no doubt at this time that we all seek our true independence and want to develop systems & strategies where we become free from the monarchy. But until then we will always remain a courteous and respectful country."

"I am a firm believer in reparations and as such when I was Minister of Youth and Culture of culture I led the reparations committee which made strides in developing a legal submission to Britain which examined the economic cost of slavery to our country."

"I welcome them wholeheartedly with our warm hospitality and look forward to us having productive discussions about our future."
