Oscars 2022: The Chris Rock joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith that set Will Smith off

One of the most incredible moments in Oscars history has just unfolded at the 2022 Academy Awards ceremony, with Will Smith accosting Chris Rock over a joke he made about his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith.

In a scarcely believable turn of events, actor Smith came up on stage after Rock's gag and seemed to jokingly strike him in the face.

But after returning to his seat, Smith appeared genuinely angry and twice told Rock to "keep my wife's name out of your f**king mouth" as the comic watched on dumbfounded.

But what exactly was the gag that got under Smith's skin?

Well, it all kicked off when Rock jokingly suggested Pinkett-Smith star in a G.I. Jane sequel.

"Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can't wait to see you," he said in an apparent quip about her shaved head.

The actress in 2018 admitted she has alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that causes her hair to fall out. Pinkett-Smith hasn't shied away from talking about her hair loss and often shares photos of herself without a wig on social media.

Adding fuel to Smith's fiery outburst was the fact this wasn't Rock's first time poking fun at him and Pinkett-Smith at the Oscars.

When he hosted the Academy Awards in 2016, the comic drew controversy for making fun of Pinkett-Smith's decision to boycott the ceremony over its lack of diversity in his opening monologue.

"Jada got mad, said she's not coming. Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna's panties - I wasn't invited," Rock said.

"You get mad. It's not fair that Will was this good and didn't get nominated. It's also not fair that Will was paid $20 million for Wild Wild West," he added, referencing the 1999 film Smith starred in that was widely panned by critics.

Earlier in the 2022 show, co-host Regina Hall joked about the couple's open marriage and several other speakers also made light about Smith's outburst during award introductions later in the ceremony.
