Rose Matafeo and Stephen Colbert chat Starstruck, Jacinda Ardern joining improv comedy nights

Rose Matafeo and Stephen Colbert have joked with each other on US TV about the idea of everyone in New Zealand knowing each other, each talking about encounters with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern that likely would not happen with other countries' leaders.

Matafeo joined the US late night TV show this week to promote the new season of her show Starstruck.

"Do all the celebrities in New Zealand know each other? Do you hang out? I went to Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister's house. I went there for a little [barbeque] in the backyard and Lorde was there," said Colbert during the segment.

"Do you all know each other?"

"I don't want to add to the stereotype that New Zealand is so small that everyone knows each other. But yeah, it is," replied Matafeo.

"I know Jacinda because she was the Culture and Arts Minister of New Zealand. I do improv comedy... and she came to our shows and did monologues and stuff... as Prime Minister."

"She would get up and do a monologue before you guys would do a set as an inspiration?" Colbert asked.

"Yeah. I don't know what her advisors were - what was she doing?" Matfeo said.

An impressed Colbert eventually slapped his desk and sat back in his chair before declaring: "We need better rulers over here."

Matafeo and Colbert also chatted about being mutual fans of Lord of the Rings. The New Zealand comedian also talked about obsessively watching Bridget Jones's Diary as a teenager, pavlova and having a celebrity height chart.
