Ashley Bloomfield says he'll sing The Cure classic at farewell party

The generally revered main character of New Zealand's COVID response, Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield, announced on Tuesday morning he is to step down in July.

But how will the beloved doctor party on his way out of the job?

The answer was revealed at a media briefing Dr Bloomfield held with COVID-19 Response Chris Hipkins.

Asked if there would be karaoke at his leaving party, Dr Bloomfield replied: "Heck yes."

"I'll start with - well, famously I did a duet with minister [Ayesha] Verrall to [Bee Gees hit] 'Staying Alive'. But probably I'll kick off with 'Friday I'm in Love' by The Cure," he said.

It's not the first time Dr Bloomfield has given New Zealand an insight into his musical side.

During an interview with Three's former breakfast programme The AM Show in 2020, he blushed when naming an Eric Clapton classic as his favourite love song.

"Ah, er... 'Wonderful Tonight' would be my favourite one I think. It means a lot to me from when I just started dating my now-wife," he said at the time.

Last year, Dr Bloomfield was also caught on camera busting out some dance moves during the 'Super Saturday' COVID vaccination drive.
