Netflix, Apple, Sony backing away from Will Smith projects after Oscars slap - reports

The future of several future Will Smith movie projects is reportedly in jeopardy amid the fallout from the actor's attack on Chris Rock at the Oscars last week.

Netflix and Apple TV Plus have both pulled out of a bidding war on a Smith biopic based on his autobiography, according to The Sun, while Sony's development of Bad Boys 4 has been paused, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Netflix film Fast and Loose, which was set to star Smith in the lead and be directed by Deadpool 2's David Leitch, has also been "quietly moved... to the back burner", reported The Hollywood Reporter.

"A few other projects in pre-production are likely to do the same," the article said, noting Apple hasn't commented on its slave drama starring Smith entitled Emancipation, which is currently in post-production.

Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences over the weekend, some five days after the Oscars incident, during which he also yelled obscenities loudly following a joke from Rock about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

"I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken," Smith said in a statement.

"So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate."

The Academy is proceeding with disciplinary measures against Smith, who has also publicly apologised to Rock since he slapped him.
