A new book on the Royal Family has revealed Prince William was a "holy terror," as a young child.

The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor - The Truth and Turmoil, written by Tina Brown claims both the Queen and the late Princess Diana admitted Prince William was out of control as a young boy.

Brown is a journalist and former editor of Vanity Fair.

Entertainment website Page Six reported Princess Diana admitted in the book her son had become troublesome over the years.

"By the time he was four, he had the unattractive habit of yapping at his nanny, Barbara Barnes."

"No one tells me what to do! When I am king I will have you punished" Prince William would yap.

According to the book, around the age of six, William began to calm down and Harry became the troublesome one, smearing sheep poo on his father's suit when he was set to board a helicopter for an official trip.

Brown wrote Prince Charles wailed when he put on his suit.

"Look at me, I am absolutely covered in sheep sh*t."

As Willam grew older he became a sounding board for his mother whom she saw as her "most trusted confidant" and "my little wise old man," reported Page Six.

The book states the young Duke of Cambridge, understood his mother more than his younger brother Harry but idealised her less.

"He knew the tabloids made her life hell, but he also knew she colluded with them."

The book: The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor - The Truth and Turmoil, is out now.
