A United States television host claims to have the solution to declining testosterone levels in men - and it's nuts.

In a documentary series about the "total collapse" of testosterone levels in men, Fox News host Tucker Carlson suggests the answer is 'testicle tanning'.

In a preview of the documentary series The End of Men, Carlson said red light therapy on a male's private parts or 'testicle tanning' would help the body repair its testosterone levels.

The preview started with a montage of half-naked men shooting rifles, milking cows and wrestling, among other 'masculine' things. However, it took a more peculiar turn when a naked man was shown standing on a rock with a red light projected onto his private parts.

The clip quickly spread across social media, leaving people confused about what they had watched, while many others were concerned about Carlson's portrayal of 'masculinity'.

"Actual men - works for a living, hang with friends, spends time with family and kids," a Twitter user wrote.

"Tucker's right-wing version of men - shoots bottles of liquid with guns, wrestles other men, inserts penis in Tesla recharging stations."

People were also quick to point out that Carlson has been reportedly accused of homophobic comments in the past.

"So Tucker Carlson is fighting gayness with homoerotic commercials and testicle-tanning? That anti-gay man sure spends a lot of time thinking about naked men," one person tweeted.

While testosterone levels are reportedly dropping, an expert has warned that testicle tanning will not work.

Certified urologist and sex medicine doctor Ashley Winter tweeted in response to Carlson that the red light treatment, also known as bromeopathy, does nothing.

"You cannot tan an internal organ. Tanning your scrotal sack and calling it 'testicle tanning' is like tanning your abdominal skin and calling it 'liver tanning'," Dr Winter tweeted.

In 2017, a major study found over the past four decades sperm levels among men in Western countries had dropped by more than 50 percent.

However, it is recommended to see a doctor if you are experiencing low levels of testosterone rather than giving testicle tanning a try.
