A nightclub in the US state of Maryland has issued an apology after a video went viral showing people partying while an embalmed corpse was displayed onstage.

The deceased man on show was rapper Goonew, real name Markelle Morrow, who was shot and killed aged 24 last month during a suspected robbery.

Video of his body displayed in Bliss nightclub in front of a crowd of people dancing disturbed many viewers.

One comment on Twitter that amassed over 200 likes states: "no way goonew mama approved that shit that's so sad and disrespectful [sic]."

Amid the outcry, Bliss posted an apology statement claiming management didn't know Goonew's body would be on display.

"Our deepest condolences to Goonew's family, friends, and fans. Bliss was contacted by a local funeral home to rent out our venue for Goonew's home-going celebration. Bliss was never made aware of what would transpire," it reads.

"We sincerely apologise to all those who may be upset or offended. Please keep Goonew's family and friends in your prayers at this difficult time. Respectfully, Bliss DC."

However, despite the reaction from many, Goonew's family was reportedly happy with the nightclub display.

Fox 5 reports his mother Patrice Morrow said that was "exactly" how the family wanted to honour him.

"People probably don't even know nothing about us," she said.

"They have no idea. People just saying what they want to say and that's fine. That's perfectly fine. I'm pleased with how I sent my son away. I wish people would just let me grieve in peace."

Goonew's sister Ariana Morrow added: "We don't care about anybody and what ya'll have to say negative... They're like, 'I know his mama wouldn't approve of that'. Yeah, she did, she was onstage with us."

Goonew was killed on March 18 in District Heights, Maryland. Police continue to investigate the homicide and are offering a US$25,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.
