Grand Theft Auto 6 will reportedly have a playable female lead character.

According to Bloomberg, the woman will be Latina and her story arc in the game will see her as one of a pair of characters in a story "influenced" by the bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde.

It's the first time in the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series that there's been a female lead character.

The last game featured three leads, Michael, Trevor and Franklin, with their intersecting stories colliding at various points of the narrative.

Bloomberg also reported the game would be set in a fictionalised version of Miami and similar to the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City franchise entrant.

Rockstar plans to launch the game with a single city, but add more locations over time via updates.

165 million copies of GTA 5 were sold worldwide, with an online element continuing to release content regularly.

Rockstar Games, who releases the series, is reportedly planning to drop the game in the 2024 fiscal year, which runs between April 2023 and March 2024.

It's also reported development started on the game back in 2014, but "progress has been inconsistent".

The company's last major release was Red Dead Redemption 2, which was released on PS4 and Xbox One in 2018.
