The cast of the cult Australian comedy is to reunite this week to film a 20th anniversary special, according to the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH).

The original stars of the show, Gina Riley, Jane Turner and Magda Szubanski, along with Glenn Robbins (Kel) and Peter Rowsthorn (Bretty), have reportedly been convinced to get back together for a one-off special, which is understood to be broadcast later this year.

The paper revealed the actors have been meeting at a South Melbourne studio in Australia to film "new material".

It's thought the programme could have elements similar to the Friends reunion which aired in May last year, but may also include some sketch comedy as well.

Also included would be some "rare" material and some of the iconic Aussie series' best scenes, according to the SMH.

Magda Szubanski, who played Kim's second-best friend Sharon in the original series, said last year she didn't believe a revival of the show would work.

"I think it should be off the table. It holds such a special place in people's memories," she told Kyle and Jackie O's radio show in Australia.

"If we did a live show, which was a 'best of' or something like that, that's different.

"But to actually try and do a whole new series, I think you can never capture that magic again."

The first episode of the show was aired in May 2002.
