Shark Week diver Jimi Partington narrowly escapes being killed by great white shark

American expert diver Jimi Partington is lucky to have escaped alive after an encounter with shark turned near-deadly.

Partington was in the Pacific Ocean inside an open top clear plastic box when a great white shark took an interest in him.

In footage shared to his social media as part of a promotion for a film playing as part of Discovery's Shark Week, Partington revealed how the shark was enticed by the box and its contents.

Drone footage above the open box shows a shark circling around and being attracted to what's within.

After a couple of nudges on the opaque box, the shark launched a full scale attack on Partington.

Having circled around a few times, the shark accelerates up from under the water and clamps its open jaw around the box, seemingly causing it to crack open and capsize.

Unable to climb back on, Partington decided the safest way out is to quickly swim back to the boat. Fortunately for him, he made it back in time.

Partington shared some of the footage from the film Great White Open Ocean to his Instagram page, saying "It's been three years in the making and I can't wait for you all to see my incredible journey, including the closest I've ever been to a Great White Shark!"

Great White Open Ocean's producer Jeff Kurr said: "Great White Open Ocean is a film that follows the story of a friend of mine, an expert shark diver named Jimi Partington. He actually survived being hit from below by a 16-foot Great White.

"We were able to capture this encounter on film, and it's probably the most spectacular sequence in Shark Week history.

"It's also miraculous, because when Jimi was hit by the shark, he didn't get a scratch on him. He actually had to swim for his life back to the boat, but he was fine."
