Supermodel Kate Moss has broken her silence on why she had to testify in favour of Johnny Depp at the recent defamation trial between the actor and his former wife, Amber Heard.

Speaking to presenter Lauren Laverne on the BBC's Desert Island Discs radio show, Moss said she'd felt compelled to take part in the highly publicised trial.

"I know the truth about Johnny. I know he never kicked me down the stairs. I had to say that truth," she said.

"I believe in the truth and I believe in fairness and justice."

The pair dated between 1994 and 1998.

Moss appeared via videolink at the defamation trial in May 2022, after allegations that Depp had pushed her down the stairs were resurfaced by Heard's legal team.

In her brief two minute appearance, Moss denied the allegations and revealed the truth of what had occurred that day at the GoldenEye resort in Jamaica.

"We were leaving the room and Johnny left the room before I did and there had been a rainstorm," she told the court.

"As I left the room I slid down the stairs and I hurt my back and I screamed because I didn't know what had happened to me.

"[He] came running back to help me and carried me to my room and got me medical attention."

Depp sued Heard for US$50 million in the Fairfax County Court in Virginia in the US. He won the trial and was awarded US$15 million in damages from Heard.

The jury also ruled in favour of Heard in some aspects of her countersuit against Depp. She was given US$2 million in damages for one proven defamation claim.
