Author JK Rowling is working with police after receiving a death threat on Twitter following her support of author Salman Rushdie who was attacked in New York.

Following reports of Rushdie's attack, Rowling shared her sympathies on Twitter.

"Horrifying news," she tweeted.

"Feeling very sick right now. Let him be ok."

Then another user replied issuing a chilling threat.

"Don't worry you are next."

Rowling was quick to take screenshots and made a public appeal to Twitter authorities for their help.

"@TwitterSupport any chance of some support."

Replying to her own Tweet, Rowling thanked her fans for sending "supportive messages" and highlighted that police were involved in the threat and other threats made to her.

Fellow author Rushdie is reportedly on a ventilator and is unable to speak after he was stabbed repeatedly at a New York writer's conference on Friday (local time).
