Musician John Legend has spoken out over the ending of his friendship with fellow musician Kanye West because of his support of former US President Donald Trump.

On Thursday (local time), the Grammy award-winning singer spoke on CNN's 'The Axe Files' podcast about how he couldn't be friends with West anymore and said: "We publicly disagreed on his running for office and supporting Trump."

West supported Trump's presidency by wearing 'Make America Great Again' merch on social media and visiting him in the Oval Office.

West also ran for the US presidency in 2020. He did not receive a lot of support during his run.

"He was upset that I didn't support his run for presidency of the United States of America - for understandable reasons," Legend said.

The singer-songwriter also said his former friend was very vocal about what he wanted.

"He's been pretty upfront with his opinions, his struggles, all the things that he's dealing with. And I think what you see with him is pretty much what you get," Legend said on the CNN podcast.

According to the New York Post, he said his friendship with West was straining for him.

"I think it became too much for us to sustain our friendship, honestly."

Legend supported current US President Joe Biden in his 2020 election run, even performing at the inaugural concert in 2021.
