Olivia Newton-John death: John Travolta, James Gunn, Edgar Wright post emotional tributes

Tributes are pouring in for Dame Olivia Newton-John, who died in California on Monday (local time) from cancer aged 73.

The death of the British-born, Australian-raised performer was announced on her Instagram account in a post that said she "passed away peacefully" at her ranch home, "surrounded by family and friends."

Social media is being swamped with tributes to the actress who played Sandy in 1978 movie Grease and had a pop career that included hit songs like 'Physical' and 'Xanadu'.

Grease co-star John Travolta led the tributes with an Instagram post.

"My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much," Travolta said.

"We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the moment I saw you and forever!

"Your Danny, your John!"

George Takei posted that fans were "hopelessly devoted to you."

"We have lost a great, iconic artist in Olivia Newton John, gone too soon from us at age 73," he said on Twitter.

"I trust she is now in the great Xanadu beyond. Know that we are forever hopelessly devoted to you, Olivia. Rest in song and mirth."

UK filmmaker Edgar Wright said that Olivia had "dominated" when he was younger.

"Olivia Newton John so completely dominated the charts and Top Of The Pops when I was a kid, it felt like she WAS pop music. And yes, Xanadu is still a stone cold classic song. RIP x," he posted.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn also paid homage and revealed he'd had a surprising connection to Newton-John.

"Really sad to hear about the passing of Olivia Newton-John. My first real crush as a kid. I loved Grease & her music & I coincidentally also bought & lived in for a while the wonderful home she built in Malibu. May she Rest In Peace," he said.

But perhaps the most telling tribute from Jeff Thompson, a television writer and stand up comic who revealed how Newton-John had the magic touch with whoever she met.

"I interviewed Olivia Newton-John several years ago. She was so humble," said Thompson.

"The moment she walked into the room and said Hello,My Name Is Olivia and I'm here to talk to Jeff my heart melted. She even wrote a letter to my friend's mom who had breast cancer. RIP Olivia. I love you!"
