Simon Bridges unveiled as the Retro Robot on Masked Singer NZ

Former National Party leader Simon Bridges has been unveiled as the Retro Robot in the latest eviction from the Masked Singer NZ.

Bridges had performed a rendition of '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman' by Aretha Franklin and had gone up against Magic Monster, who took on Lewis Capaldi's 'Something in the Water'.

But despite a jaw-dropping rendition, the Retro Robot was booted off the show.

Only panellist James Roque correctly guessed Bridges was under the mask. The other three panellists, including guest panellist Tofiga Fepulea'i, were stumped; guessing Sam Cane, Joseph Parker and Winston Peters.

"I did not expect that voice, bro," Roque said.

"People's voices are different when they sing, you have a very distinctive accent Simon, I think you know that too. When you sing, it's not there, so it's hard to guess.

Bridges said: "Honestly, this has been amazing. I've been compared to Sonny Bill Williams and Joseph Parker, that is never gonna happen in the real world."

"Despite having to get hot and sweaty in the Retro Robot suit, I loved doing something very different from my day jobs and being on The Masked Singer NZ. Being compared to the likes of Sonny Bill Williams each week was a brilliant laugh. I'd do it all again but hopefully I'd be better the second time!"

The Masked Singer continues weekly on Sunday on Three and on ThreeNow.
