The 'transactional conversation' your cat is having with you to sneakily get more treats

Cats can have strange ways of communicating with us, but a cat behavioural expert has revealed to The Project that there is one way they communicate with humans to get exactly what they want.

Cat behavioural expert Jackson Galaxy, from the TV show My Cat From Hell, uses his magical moggy skills to transform a scratchy, bitey demon into a chilled-out angel.

Galaxy told The Project cats only meow to humans, they don't meow to other cats.

"It is because we reward that sound. We respond to it and then we give something back to them. It's a conversation but it's definitely a transactional conversation," Galaxy told The Project.

"Your cat is meowing for a reason and usually it's because we're like, 'Oh that meow is so cute, let me give you a treat', and then you hear a meow at four o'clock in the morning."

The behavioural expert said that as cat owners, we also expect something in return from them as well.

"We expect cats to give us something back in the relationship that a lot of the time looks more like what a dog would do because we have conditioned dogs over tens of thousands of years to give that response of 'I love you and the whole world revolves around you' response."

Galaxy added that we never did that with cats so we can't expect them to respond in the same way a dog would.

"Their reaction in the moment to us is still very cat but we still know that it's loving, we just have to remember they're not dogs."
