How covering Queen Elizabeth's death changed Patrick Gower's perspective on the monarchy

Hordes of people have descended on London and the wider United Kingdom in the wake of Queen Elizabeth's death.

Among the crowds was Newshub's crew, including national correspondent Patrick Gower, who said covering the late monarch's death and her funeral has changed his perspective on the monarchy.

While Gower said he previously had his doubts about the Royal Family's role, "especially for New Zealand", being in the United Kingdom during the period of mourning for the Queen has changed that.

"The people taking their kids along, or the pride you saw in those people from the New Zealand armed services - there is just this magic around the monarchy," he told The Project on Tuesday.

"It sort of shows me that there is a need in life sometimes to believe in something a little bit bigger than yourself."

In London after the Queen's funeral on Monday, Gower met with some members of the New Zealand Air Force, Army, and Navy, who said it was an honour to be there and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Gower said it was this "magic of the monarchy" and seeing people show up for the late Queen that changed his views on the Royal Family.

"Whether it's for New Zealand into the future is up for other people to decide, but I've really enjoyed seeing the magic of the monarchy," he said.

"It's up to the monarchy of course to help preserve that magic for us, but I've certainly been touched and I'm much more endeared to this magical monarchy."
