Gary McCormick to leave More FM after 18 years, will join Today FM

Gary McCormick is to leave More FM in April after 18 years as part of the Breakfast Club early morning radio show.

He will join Today FM, where he will do "political stuff, political panels, podcasts and my own show."

Co-hosts Lana Cochrane-Searle and Adam Percival made no comments about their own future with the team but More FM confirmed a new host would be revealed for the show on Thursday.

The early morning radio veteran told listeners on Tuesday he was "not sorry about what I will do in my new role" but that he was "certainly going to miss" his team.

"From April next year I'm going to make a change," he said on-air.

"Up until April I'm going to be here, the life of the party leading the team, a star in the making, my usual humble self.

"But after that I'm going to go to another area, I've flipped from one [career] to another throughout my life. Everything's gone amazingly well for me by accident, not by design.

"But I'm going to go to Today FM where I'll be able to do political stuff, political panels, podcasts and later on, my own show."

Throughout his 18-year career on More FM, one of the things he'd been proudest of was raising "social issues" on the air, he said.

McCormick acknowledged his departure - after being a constant presence throughout the likes of the Christchurch earthquakes and COVID-19 pandemic - would be a "shock" to some.

"I know it'll be a shock to some people and I hope it doesn't upset you too much because we have a team thing here and you do become part of people's lives.

"We know that - particularly in the morning when they're vulnerable, we're aware of the responsibility we carry to help you through the day, and some people have had rough times, through the pandemic, through earthquakes and all that stuff, it has been important to have this team," he said.

"It's going to be a bit jarring not to be addressing the same people. But probably the time has come for me to do that other stuff that I've been thinking about doing.

"So I am not sorry about what I will do in my new role but I'm certainly gonna miss you guys, but then I'm gonna be in the building, so whether you like it or not, you're still gonna see me around here and I will have my voice in another forum."

Simon Barnett, Lana Searle and Gary McCormick were More FM Breakfast Club's original trio.

Barnett left the team in 2018, moving off-air to focus on his wife Jodi's health after she was diagnosed with brain lesions in the first-half of the year.

He eventually left in 2018 to join Newstalk ZB.
