Controversial former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson says he wants to see Meghan Markle "paraded naked through the streets" in a newspaper column in which he also claims Prince Harry is being controlled by her.

He also compared Meghan to infamous UK serial killer Rose West, who was married to Fred West and who killed 12 people between 1967 and 1987.

The column is being widely condemned, with many labelling it "vile" and "disgusting". Clarkson's own daughter has publicly spoken out against the column, describing it as misogynistic and bullying.

Clarkson has a long history of making racist and offensive comments as a broadcaster, and was fired from the BBC after punching a colleague. In his new column for UK tabloid The Sun, the commenator said he hated the Duchess of Sussex on "a cellular level."

"I hate her. Not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level," wrote Clarkson.

"At night, I'm unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, 'Shame!' and throw lumps of excrement at her.

"But what makes me despair is that younger people, especially girls, think she's pretty cool. They think she was a prisoner of Buckingham Palace, forced to talk about nothing but embroidery and kittens.

"That makes me even angrier. Can't they see everything that's happening is so very obviously pre-planned.

"Everyone who's my age thinks the same way."

However, everyone who is Clarkson's age does not feel the same way.

After his column was published, commenters online strongly disagreed with the Grand Tour host, saying he was out of touch.

Former UK home secretary Jacqui Smith wrote online: "I'm your age @JeremyClarkson and I couldn't disagree more with you. Why do you have to be so horrible? I can't believe it's good for you and it certainly isn't good for the rest of us."

"I'm sorry but what has Meghan Markle done to deserve to be more hated than Rose West?" another wrote.

Clarkson's eldest daughter Emily published a statement as an Instagram Story post saying: "My views are and have always been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying and the treatment of women by the media.

"I want to make it very clear that I stand against everything that my dad wrote about Meghan Markle and I remain standing in support of those targeted with online hatred."

Many celebrities have also slammed Clarkson's comments, with one calling him "an utter piece of trash" and others condemning The Sun for publishing the column.

"NO Jeremy Clarkson. Not on any level, in any circumstance, is it ok to write this stuff about any woman & absolutely NO to  'everyone who's my age thinks the same'. No no no. We absolutely do NOT think the same.Listen to the noise Jeremy. The crowds are chanting 'shame on YOU'," said UK TV host Carol Vorderman.

UK comedian Dom Joly labelled Clarkson's attack "utterly vile".

"Literally gobsmacked at the utterly vile and disgusting comments written about Meghan Markle by Jeremy Clarkson in The Sun. What an utter piece of trash he is… what is it with these type of men that triggers them so?"

"I don't care who you are or who you work for you simply can not write things like this. It is a blatant appeal to incite humiliation and violence on a woman. Some have excused it as dark humour. There is no joke here @JeremyClarkson and no excuse," Doctor Who star and comedian John Bishop wrote.

"What a vile misogynist @JeremyClarkson is but also how is someone able to print such abusive comments in an actual newspaper?" Radio DJ Edith Bowman asked.
