A festival north of Auckland has been cancelled at the last minute due to incoming heavy rain and strong winds.

Summer Haze Matakana was scheduled for Wednesday, but concert organisers on Tuesday night announced their decision to cancel the show.

There is a heavy rain warning in place for Northland from Wednesday, as well as a heavy rain watch for Auckland and other areas in the North Island.

"The health and safety of our crew and attendees are paramount, and the decision has been made in conjunction with the venue, production and promoter team," Summer Haze said on its website.

"We thank you for your understanding and patience while we work to secure the site and apologies for any inconvenience caused."

Groups including Shapeshifter, Fat Freddy's Drop, and Black Comet were due to perform.

On their Instagram page, Fat Freddy's Drop confirmed the event had been "unfortunately cancelled".

"Standing down the bedazzle," the group said, posting a photo of a white singlet top with gems on it.

Also on Instagram, Shapeshifter posted a screenshot of Summer Haze's cancellation statement and simply captioned it with the crying emoji.

Summer Haze said they will announce more soon regarding ticket refunds.
