Sharon Stone has revealed the notorious sequence in 1992 psycho-sexual thriller Basic Instinct caused her to lose access to her son in a custody battle.

Stone played Catherine Tramell in the film, alongside Michael Douglas - and in one of the film's most famous sequences, she's shown to be wearing no underwear while uncrossing her legs in front of the police interrogating her.

She told podcast Table for Two the scene was shot without her knowledge and took place after she was told her underwear was causing problems with the lighting on the set and she'd have to remove them.

She claimed the sequence came back to haunt her during a custody battle with her then ex-husband Phil Bronstein over their adopted son, Roan.

The pair married in 1998 after the erotic thriller was released, but after being unable to have children, they adopted in 2000. They divorced in 2004 and Stone lost custody of her young son.

In 2008, Stone took Bronstein to court over access to Roan.

"The judge asked my child, my tiny little boy, 'Do you know your mother makes sex movies?'"

"This kind of abuse by the system, that it was considered what kind of parent I was because I made that movie.

"People are walking around with no clothes on at all on regular TV now. You saw maybe a 16th of a second of possible nudity from me, and I lost custody of my child," she told the podcast.

"I ended up in the Mayo Clinic with extra heartbeats in the upper and lower chambers of my heart," she claimed. "It broke my heart."
