The Rocky Horror Picture Show creator Richard O'Brien says 'drunks and insomniacs' helped fuel the show's creation

The Rocky Horror Picture Show creator Richard O'Brien has opened up about the 1973 musical's creation, saying late night TV helped fuel its inception.

Speaking on AM as the show celebrated its 50th anniversary, O'Brien - who resides in New Zealand - revealed he'd missed out on the partying in London due to catching COVID-19.

He also told AM hosts Ryan Bridge and Laura Tupou that it was late night TV which led him to create the stage show.

"I was one of those that watched late night TV, and late night TV used to switch off at midnight and 1am so only drunks, insomniacs and people like myself would watch," he said.

"Dreadful B movies would go out [on air] and I loved the unintentional comedy of these things," he told them.
