How a duck wrecked Sinead O'Connor's only New Zealand concert ever

After the tragic news broke of Sinead O'Connor dying at the age of 56, fans have been sharing memories online of her songs and talent.

Tributes have poured in for the singer whose cover of the Prince song 'Nothing Compares 2 U' garnered her millions of fans - many of them Kiwis.

O'Connor's only New Zealand concert experience was memorably derailed by a duck when she performed her one and only gig at the WOMAD festival in April, 2015.

During 'Nothing Compares 2 U', O'Connor faltered and lost her way midway through the song, forcing her to apologise to the audience at the Brooklands Bowl that "the duck took over".

She quickly abandoned it, telling the New Plymouth crowd amid giggles: "I can't, we, I just found the duck too funny."

O'Connor later gave more insight via Facebook as to why she couldn't complete the song.

"There was a tiny lake between the stage and the audience. Just as I finished singing 'it's been so lonely without you here, like a bird without a song', a duck got to the front of stage and went 'quack quack!'" she wrote.

"Couldn't finish. Too funny. #‎ABirdWithASong."

Prince wrote 'Nothing Compares 2 U' in 1984, for his side-project band the Family. O'Connor released her cover in 1990.

O'Connor's family said in a statement to Irish news broadcaster RTE: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."
