Child rapper and influencer Lil Tay is reportedly alive just one day after her social media declared her and her brother dead.

On Wednesday (US time), a statement on her Instagram said the 14-year-old had "suddenly" died.

However, TMZ has now reported the rapper had been the victim of a social media hack.

In a statement provided to the outlet, but not independently verified, Lil Tay said: "I want to make it clear that my brother and I are safe and alive, but I'm completely heartbroken, and struggling to even find the right words to say.

"It's been a very traumatizing 24 hours. All day yesterday, I was bombarded with endless heartbreaking and tearful phone calls from loved ones all while trying to sort out this mess."

"My Instagram account was compromised by a 3rd party and used to spread jarring misinformation and rumors regarding me, to the point that even my name was wrong. My legal name is Tay Tian, not 'Claire Hope'."

Her management told Variety on Wednesday she had died, confirming the initial death statement posted to her Instagram. That original Instagram statement has now been deleted.

Lil Tay had not posted on her social channel since 2018.

TMZ claimed there were still questions over why it had taken 24 hours for Lil Tay to confirm she was still alive, and had contacted police in the area where she lived over the supposed death.

Lil Tay rose to fame in 2018 when - aged just nine years old - she posted sensationalised videos on Instagram of herself rapping and using many expletives about living a lavish lifestyle.

The Canadian performer had dubbed herself the "youngest flexer of the century".
