International heavyweight rapper Lil Uzi Vert films music video in Auckland CBD

Auckland has become an unexpected star in four-time Grammy nominee Lil Uzi Vert's latest music video.

While it remains unclear why the rapper chose to film in Tāmaki Makaurau, those who champion the CBD are happy he did.

Vert's latest single, Red Moon, was likely filmed when the rapper was here in October for the 'Listen In' music festival and features a high-rise view of the city, bus trips, and walks through the city streets.

Vert's most popular song, XO Tour Lif3 has over half a billion views on YouTube.

"It's tremendously exciting - I mean it's timely, priceless publicity of our beautiful city," Heart of the City CEO Viv Beck said.

Beck hopes the video will raise the profile of the city, as nearly one and a half million people have viewed the video in two days.

"37 million people listen to him monthly on Spotify, I mean these are big numbers," she said.

Fans around the world have already been dropping reaction videos en masse, with one Youtuber saying "woah woah woah where is this? How are people not recognising that?"

Vert is not the first international star to film their hits here, with the Beastie Boys filming in Rotorua in the 90's.

Rita Ora and Taylor Swift have even given it a go.
