Newshub's Amanda Gillies details terrifying moment that could have led to 'multiple deaths'

Newshub national correspondent Amanda Gillies has detailed a terrifying moment on the road she believes could have killed multiple people.

Speaking as an AM fill-in co-host on Wednesday, Gillies said her husband was recently driving them back into Auckland when the car in front of them "slammed on the brakes".

"We thought, 'Holy heck.' Thankfully Tim was taking notice, he was driving," Gillies said.

"There was a car in our lane coming towards us overtaking... on a yellow line.

"Thankfully the driver in front of us saw it, slammed on the brakes and pulled over. The car then hooned off and honked its horn," she said.

Gillies went on to detail a second situation that happened just moments later, which she believes could have been fatal.

"We were just about to come into Auckland, so there were two lanes on our side - one was a passing lane and we were in the passing lane," she explained.

"Someone from the other side had pulled into our lane and stopped with their indicator on, because they wanted to turn and go across both the 100km/h lanes and, luckily, Tim swerved and there was no one in the lane before us.

"They were just like, 'Dum dee doo, dum dee doo' - didn't give a hoot, didn't care.

"We were a whisker from having a head on crash, multiple deaths," she stressed.

She urged people across the country to "please drive carefully", admitting she'd recently noticed some "real idiots" out there on the roads.
