Emmy Awards 2024: Melanie Lynskey not attending event after COVID-19 diagnosis

New Zealand actor Melanie Lynskey will not be attending Tuesday's Emmy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles after revealing on social media she has tested positive for COVID-19.

Lynskey, who's up for the Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Yellowjackets and was nominated for her role as a Guest Actress in a Drama Series for The Last of Us, shared on Instagram that she had "a bit of a cry" when her test came up positive.

"My little one came home from school on Friday and wanted to have a cuddle with mama. As we were cuddling and talking about her day, I noticed she was really warm," she said.

"After the cuddles we did a Covid test, and sure enough she was positive. Eventually, so was I. We are both feeling fine, but the way [sic]! But I'm giving out our personal medical information to let everyone know why I'm not attending the Emmys tonight."

Lynskey also revealed her heartbreak at not being able to attend the ceremony.

"For many years, these types of amazing events were not a part of my life, and to finally be invited to the party and not get to go is painful! This is the greatest honour of my career, and there was a team of amazing people who were going to get me ready today," she shared.

However, she went on to reveal a sweet gesture by her daughter had helped change her perspective.

"I was sitting despondently on the stairs when my daughter handed me this. One page says that she loves me, and the other page says that Dada loves me, and then there's a mama snail and baby snails (???). Anyway. It reminded me of all that is important in my world. I would choose cuddling my feverish little one every time, even if it means missing a night like tonight."

The 46-year-old attended the Emmys ceremony in 2022, having been nominated for Yellowjackets, but lost to Euphoria star Zendaya.

Lynskey also paid tribute to her fellow nominees Bella Ramsey, Sharon Horgan, Sarah Snook, and Elizabeth Moss and thanked her Yellowjackets co-stars.

Newshub Live at 6pm will have a wrap on all the big winners from the 2024 Emmy Awards.
