Australian police have launched a manhunt for former Home and Away star Orpheus Pledger as they investigate a violent assault on a woman.

Pledger, who played Mason Morgan in the soap from 2016 until 2019, failed to show up for court on Tuesday in Melbourne.

He disappeared after walking out from Melbourne's Royal Hospital while waiting for a court-ordered medical assessment. He had been due to appear via video link from court-ordered mental health care to finalise a bail application.

Pledger's lawyer, Jasper MacCuspie, revealed his client had absconded from the hospital.

The Daily Mail Australia reports a warrant has now been issued for his arrest.

Pledger has been on remand since March 27 after he was refused bail on charges of injury and unlawful assault.

Melbourne Magistrates Court released a video of the alleged assault showing a woman being attacked in a bar on March 25. The clip shows her being grabbed from behind, pulled to the ground and stomped on.

The woman suffered injuries including a haematoma on her head, as well as cuts to her cheek and bruises.
