Veteran BBC newsreader Huw Edwards has quit the broadcaster on "medical advice" months after he was accused of soliciting sexually explicit photos from a young person.

While police found no evidence a criminal offence had been committed, Edwards had been off air for months, and had been hospitalised following "serious mental health issues".

In a short statement issued by the BBC, the departure of one of the corporation's top paid stars said it allowed "all parties to move forward".

"Huw Edwards has today resigned and left the BBC. After 40 years of service, Huw has explained that his decision was made on the basis of medical advice from his doctors.

"The BBC has accepted his resignation which it believes will allow all parties to move forward. We don't believe it appropriate to comment further."

In July 2023, a report by The Sun newspaper a BBC presenter had allegedly paid a young person thousands of pounds for sexually explicit photos, sparking days of speculation over which BBC star was at the centre of the claims.

His wife, Vicky Flind, revealed it was Edwards with a public statement she said she made out of concern for her husband's mental health and to protect their children.

While police said there was no criminal investigation, BBC show Newsnight said at the time new claims had been lobbied at Edwards after she spoke to a person who previously worked at the organisation.

"This person told me they had never met the newsreader, this person said that they had received late-night messages on social media, including kisses from Huw Edwards, which they said they believed was an abuse of power," the BBC reported her as saying.

Derbyshire went on that a colleague had also spoken to an existing staffer, "who told us that the presenter had sent them a message on social media commenting on their physical appearance, which gave them a 'cold shudder'."

Edwards was a familiar face to UK viewers as well as millions globally as he'd announced such big events as the Queen's death and King Charles III's coronation.
