Warning to Stuff they may have 'underestimated' what's needed to make TV news

Media commentator Duncan Grieve is warning Stuff they may have "underestimated" the size of the task ahead of them when taking over the 6pm news bulletin on Three and ThreeNow.

On Tuesday it was revealed Warner Bros. Discovery and media company Stuff had signed a deal to produce a 6pm news bulletin to replace Newshub Live at 6 when the company is shut down on Friday, July 5.

The first bulletin is due to go to air on Saturday, July 6.

Speaking on AM on Wednesday, Spinoff founder Duncan Grieve told AM host Melissa Chan-Green the reality of what they face is daunting.

"That challenge has been underestimated," he said.

"It will be a very different product - but the presentation of it [the 6pm bulletin] has been underrated. That layer of how you make it sing and impact for the audience is really, really difficult.

"They have to learn it very, very quickly. It contains a lot of pitfalls that may become obvious over time."

However, while Grieve welcomed the fact news would be continuing on the channel, he warned: "It maintains a competitive tension between Three and TVNZ, but we're still down one of the most vivacious newsrooms in the country; it's being replaced by another one in terms of the content, but we're still losing Newshub."
