Ryan Bridge is to host the Early Edition programme on Newstalk ZB, the radio station's owner NZME announced.
Bridge will take over the role that was vacated by Kate Hawkesby in December. The show runs from 5am to 6am on the radio station.
He will begin on Monday, July 8.
In a statement, NZME chief audio officer Jason Winstanley said Bridge would "connect with audiences".
"Ryan is a popular, talented broadcaster with significant radio experience, extensive knowledge of local and global issues and a special ability to engage and connect with audiences," said Winstanley.
"I know our listeners will enjoy waking up to Ryan sharing the latest news and providing analysis of the stories making headlines each weekday morning."
Bridge left AM in 2023 as part of a plan for a new current affairs show at 7pm to replace The Project NZ, which finished in December 2023.
He was to be the sole host of the hard news show, reportedly to be entitled simply 'Bridge'.
However, the planned show was axed before it launched when Warner Bros. Discovery decided to shut down its New Zealand news operations in their entirety.
Prior to replacing Duncan Garner as the host of Three's morning show, Bridge hosted the drive show on radio station Magic Talk and has also been a reporter on Morning Report on Radio New Zealand.
