Need to save a life? Do the Macarena

New research suggests pumping along with 'Macarena' can help people keep in time while performing CPR.

The study from the University of Barcelona tested three groups who either had no help, a smartphone metronome app or the upbeat pop song to do the lifesaving technique.

The app was rated the best method, but using the song also improved the quality of chest compressions.

"Both the app and using mental memory aid 'Macarena' improved the quality of chest compressions by increasing the proportion of adequate rate but not the depth of compressions," the researchers said.

"The metronome app was more effective, but with a significant onset delay."

'Macarena', a massive hit in the mid-1990s, has a beats-per-minute of 103 - almost exactly the same as the appropriately named 1977 Bee Gees hit 'Stayin' Alive', which has also been touted as a life-saver.

Just don't do the dance while you're trying to save someone's life, or it might not work.

The research was presented at the Euroanaesthesia Congress in Copenhagen.
