A mum blogger has sparked an online debate after calling for school holidays to be scrapped, allowing parents to choose when their children take time off instead.

Writing anonymously for mums.net, the Australian mother said she had a "genius idea".

"Run schools like a regular workplace in that they operate 52 weeks of the year, teachers and students to get four weeks allocated holiday allowance per year and parents can use this at their discretion," she said.

"Staff would be able to be more flexible and they would have more time in the year to teach children at a more realistic pace?"

She had some supporters who felt that the current system left parents and teachers exhausted at the end of the term, and the long summer holidays were hard to manage.

But many parents felt that the structure was necessary, and the woman's idea would leave kids feeling burnt out.

"School doesn't exist purely to facilitate working parents," said one commenter.

Another commenter pointed out that a major flaw in the idea would be that some parents wouldn't take their children out of school, and they'd get no time off.

Many felt that it would cause chaos within the school system, with children missing important work and then needing to catch up.

It'd also cost the Government more money if the school was not closed at regular intervals throughout the year.
