Cracking open a cold one with the ladies: The female brewer showing the boys how it's done

  • 05/07/2018

Making  a brew and cracking open a cold one with the lads tend to be thought of as predominantly male pursuits, especially if you watch all the New Zealand backyard barbeque-based beer ads.

But one woman is here to change all that.

Tracy Banner is Nelson's Sprig and Fern Brewery's head brewer, and owns the brewery with her husband Ken.

With 35 years in the beer brewing industry, Banner was only 16 when she first began - not even legal to buy a drink. She was head brewer at Macs for 12 years, and made history as the first female head brewer at Speight's.

Now she has her own brewery in the Richmond region, the sunniest part of the country, and told The AM Show that even after over three decades, she's not sick of it.

"No two days are the same."

Being able to make the beer and come up with a recipe is rewarding, she said, and to make a good beer you need "quality and consistency".

"That's absolutely huge to me."
