A Wellington family are outraged after a father trying to change his baby's nappy in the parents' room of Queensgate mall was refused entry by a woman already inside.

Sarah Fa'avale was shopping  with her husband Tua and baby daughter Tahani on Thursday. While she was ordering a new car seat, Tua took their daughter to the parents' room to change her nappy.

"When he went to enter however, a lady started yelling at him saying; "um excuse me!!! you can't go in there, there's mums in there!" Sarah wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday evening.

"Tua then had to leave to come and find me to change Hani's nappy as all this time she was sitting in her poos!"

"I am fuming!!!! I just can't believe some people!!! We are in 2018!!!" she continued.

"I am absolutely gobsmacked that in this day and age a new father can't change his own daughter's nappy in a PARENTS Room!????"

Tua told Stuff today it was his first time using a parents' room, and he was "just trying to help out".

"I am just a dad trying to help out with my kid, and when this woman told me I couldn't go in there because there were mums in there, I just looked at my daughter and felt quite gutted that I couldn't help her."

The Queensgate Shopping Centre have reportedly apologised to the family, and checked in on them today.

Their website states that the parents' rooms are not just for mothers. "Anyone looking after small children is welcome," it says.
