A week on from New Zealand Fashion Week, Three stylist Sarah Stuart has had some time to reflect on the runway. Here are her top picks from NZFW.
SHOWS
Trelise Cooper
I think in New Zealand as a culture we don't really play dress up and hopefully seeing more looks of this kind will encourage us to do that. Whenever I see Trelise's collections I just think of the woman herself. She always has strong feminine touch with a lot of strength.
With her shows they're there to entertain as well you always feel like you've been thoroughly entertained. Your face just gets sore from smiling. There's always something there for every woman.
Wynn Hamlin
I would happily slot this whole collection into my wardrobe. (Obviously in my size, not sample size.) Wynn's brand manages to encompass effortless cool, without sacrificing things like beautiful quality and attention to detail.
Highlights were the knitwear and button down dresses I need this dress in my life.
Not for you
Designer Jerome Taylor has gone from tradie to one NZFW's biggest ones to watch. His fashion forward streetwear is designed and made in Wellington but could sit comfortably internationally within the London or Brooklyn scene.
Stolen Girlfriends
This year lilacs and check popped on the runway. The runway was full of delicious leathers and '80s silhouettes. A standout on the runway were the fur-lined crocs I've never been a fan of crocs but suddenly I'm considering buying a pair. The power of SG.
The final line up had the models dragging lit-up dustbins, demonstrating the most stylish way of taking out the trash.
THE UP AND COMERS: Graduation Show and New Gen Shows
This year's Grads and New gen designers were on point with tight capsule collections featuring voluminous ruffles, bum bags and pastels.
Caitlin Crisp's was a standout loved it all, especially the ruffles and soft neutral tones.
Lilacs and pistachio reigned supreme for Olli in the New Gen show, as well clever ruffle placement.
Havilah's collection was made up of fun colour combinations. The green suit and lilac jumpsuit I would put in my wardrobe tomorrow.
PRESENTATIONS
Rachel Mills presentation was a standout. The way the models posed under the lighting was so complimentary. I loved the beautifully cut clothing; and especially that her fabrics are organic, sustainably sourced or naturally dyed.
Hej Hej was held on a boat docked in the Viaduct Harbour just over the bridge. We were given embroidered slippers to do a shoe swap for the boat's deck which suited the vibe of the collection perfectly summertime with blue, apricot and salmon linens.
