You could be like Prince Harry and upstage your cousin on her wedding day by announcing that your wife is pregnant, or you could come up with a unique, fun way to make the big announcement.

This year has been a bumper year of well-known Kiwi pregnancy announcements. Let's take a look at the top five:

1. Jacinda Ardern and Clarke Gayford

Back in January our Prime Minister took to social media to announce her pregnancy with an image showing three fishing hooks. Some suggested the hooks were a nod to partner and now stay-at-home dad, Clarke Gayford, an avid fisherman and host of Fish of the Day. Others pointed out the symbolism of fish hooks - good luck, strength, and safe journeys across the sea.

The couple welcomed baby Neve in June.

2. Gemma and Richie McCaw

In July, Gemma posted an image to her Instagram of three pairs of sneakers, saying: "Rich and I are very excited to announce that we are expecting our first baby later this year." Richie posted the same picture to Facebook. The perfect pic for the sporty family.

3. Toni Street

Photos of a blue Swandri-style bib, and Toni with her childhood friend Sophie Braggins, were posted to the former 7-Sharp presenter's Instagram page in February. The accompanying message said the family was "incredibly blessed" to have Toni's childhood friend  Sophie Braggins  carry the baby as a surrogate.

"My battle with the auto-immune disease Churg-Strauss means I can't carry another baby myself" Toni wrote.

Baby Lachlan was born in August.

4. Anika Moa and Natasha Utting

"Blessed day! We are joyous to announce that we are expecting a child. OfNatasha is carrying the precious fruit," Anika wrote on Instagram, with a photo of her and her wife, TV producer Natasha, in Handmaids Tale-inspired outfits.

The announcement was a play on the way handmaids are named after their commanders in the book and TV series.

Their baby is due in March 2019.

5. Nadia Lim

During a family holiday in New Caledonia in April, Kiwi celebrity chef Nadia announced her second pregnancy on Instagram.

"I promise I haven't been eating too many Easter eggs or hot cross buns, but I can tell you that another type of bun is in the oven, and should be ready in October," she wrote.

Baby boy River was born a week early, in September.
