If it seems like there have been more birthdays than usual in the last few days, there's a good reason for it.

We're currently in what could be called birthday season, when more Kiwis celebrate turning another year older than any other time of the year.

Data released by Statistics NZ reveals the 10 most common birthdays in New Zealand are all within 13 days of each other - from September 22 to October 4.

As for the single most common birthday in the country, that would be September 29.

It doesn't take a genius to work out why so many babies are born around this time. The Christmas and New Year period is a time of celebration and new life, putting many couples in the mood for romance.

Nine months on, we have an influx of Libras who have to share their birthdays with more people than usual.

But New Zealand isn't the only country with this birthing phenomenon.

A similar pattern has been observed across the Western world where New Year is celebrated at the end of December, in countries including Australia, the United States, England and Wales.

Statistics NZ has also released the country's least common birthdays, which tend to be around public holidays like Waitangi Day and Anzac Day.

Worldwide, the day that yields the least babies is Christmas Day.

That didn't stop the parents of Justin Trudeau, Humphrey Bogart or Annie Lennox, who were all born on December 25.
