September was a good month for fans of the humble lettuce as prices almost halved.

Stats NZ said poor weather in July contributed to an all-time high for lettuce prices, with a 500g head averaging at NZ$5.42.

Prices for the leafy green vegetable have fallen twice since then.

A September decrease of 45 percent contributed to the current low of NZ$1.81 per head.

"Lettuce prices reached an unseasonably low level this September," said consumer prices manager Geraldine Duoba.

The increasingly warmer weather signalled many price falls on fresh produce.

September also saw lower prices for tomatoes and cucumbers, the Stats NZ report said.

"After the poor weather and a reduced harvest in 2017, vegetable prices have returned to more typical levels for this time of year," Ms Duoba said.
