YouTube is working again after an outage that lasted about 45 minutes.

The world's largest video hosting website was unable to play content for millions of people around the world.

The Google-owned website - which hosts untold numbers of videos, with a billion hours of content watched every day - suddenly crashed on Wednesday afternoon.

The Down Detector website showed a huge spike in YouTube fails.

Various error messages appeared when clicking on videos.

No explanation has been offered yet as to what went wrong, but the company did acknowledge the outage in a short statement.

"Thanks for your reports about YouTube. We're working on resolving this and will let you know once fixed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and will keep you updated."

Memes flooded social media as users were left unsure of what to do next.

Even the New Zealand Police can see the funny side.
