An expert's advice on how to do exam study really well

  • 05/11/2018

It's exam season, and at the moment over 140,000 secondary students are getting ready for NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship exams.

With so much advice already out their on the internet, a study expert sat down with The Project team to explain some simple easy tips to get through exams.

Karen Boyes likes studying so much, she studied to perfect the art of studying - and was more than happy to share her knowledge on Monday night.

"You don't have to be smart to pass the test. You just have to know how to remember - it is about regurgitating what you need to know."

She says the worst place to study is your bed.

"Bed is for sleep. When you study on your bed, you either fall asleep or the brain goes, 'Oh lets study.'"

The place to study is any space you designate to be your study area - whether that be the kitchen table or a space on the floor, your brain knows when you go to that spot, it's time to study.

Ms Boyes also says there are some great brain foods out there that will help in the lead up to exams.

Nuts, blueberries, spinach, bananas and tomatoes are all great brain food.

She also encourages those studying to drink plenty of water, as you automatically go under stress when you're dehydrated.
