UK surgeon steals disabled park because his doors open vertically

A disabled woman has lashed out at a surgeon after he stole her disabled carpark to allow extra room for his vertical car doors to open.

Anita Harvey, who has nerve damage in her spine, was taking her also-disabled mother to the Nuffield Health Tees Hospital when she saw the man park his BMW in the last free disabled bay, Teesdale Live reports.

Having faced abuse for using the disabled parks herself, Ms Harvey decided to ask him if he was disabled, rather than assuming he was not.

But she was shocked when he openly admitted he had no real right to be parking there.

"He apparently has to park in disabled bays because his car doors open in a different way so he needs more room," she told Teesdale Live.

Ms Harvey was even more surprised when she went inside the hospital to complain and was told to go park further away.

"I thought she would at the very least apologise on his behalf but, to my disgust, she told me that there was more disabled parking bays further away from the entrance," she said.

"I could not believe that she was defending him and actually commented that he parks there all the time, as if it was fine."

Ms Harvey posted about the incident on the hospital's Facebook page, but believes it was deleted. A spokesperson for the hospital told Teesdale Live staff had been reminded not to park in disabled bays.

"We were very sorry to learn of Ms Harvey's experience and we will be contacting her to offer an apology," the spokesperson said.

"We have also reminded all those who work for us and with us of the importance of respecting the rights of disabled individuals and keeping these bays free for their use."
