Where to celebrate Thanksgiving in New Zealand this year

With the festive season upon us and Christmas fast approaching, many will be looking to celebrate US holiday Thanksgiving this week.

The American holiday always falls on the fourth Thursday of November, meaning for Kiwis it's this Thursday, November 22.

So if you're an expat, have family in the US or just want an excuse to celebrate a food-based holiday, here are some places to see it through:

The obvious port of call for American-themed food is Orleans - you might have picked up the clue in the name.

Thanksgiving will be celebrated at both Orleans Britomart (Auckland) and Christchurch on Thursday, where customers can enjoy a feast of honey-baked turkey drum with traditional stuffing and dirty gravy (what is dirty gravy? I wish to find out), "ridiculously cheesy" Mac'n'Cheese, and banoffee pie for dessert.

Other spots around Auckland holding traditional Thanksgiving feasts include Johnny Barr's American Food Bistro on Halsey Street in the CBD, and Morepork BBQ Restaurant on Jervois Road in Ponsonby.

"The menu includes all traditional favourites - turkey, ham, cornbread stuffing, cranberry sauce, string bean casserole and candied yams. And for dessert - of course, nothing other than the chef's amazing pumpkin pie - if she can't be at home for Thanksgiving she can at least share the food of her people," Morepork's website promises.

And if you're in the capital and looking to help out others on Thanksgiving, maybe see if they need a hand at the Wellington-based US Embassy's annual Thanksgiving lunch.

The embassy and local charities feed many of the city's homeless each year, with food donated by local and American companies. Chefs from restaurants around the city cook a traditional Thanksgiving meal that includes turkey, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.

According to the embassy's website, staff and community members set up and decorated the hall last year, before serving 200 people.
